Betaucourt is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Betaucourt is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, four kilometers north of Jussey and about 32 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far north-west of the department, on the western edge of the wide valley of the Saône , on the south-eastern edge of the height of the Donnet .

The area of the 7.17 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the upper Saône valley. The eastern border mostly runs along the Saône, which flows south through an alluvial lowland around 1.5 kilometers wide . The floodplain lies at an average of 215 m and is mainly used for agriculture. The river is canalised and turned into a waterway; there are two locks in the Betaucourt section. Remnants of the old barrel with several small loops are present.

From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the valley floodplain to the adjacent, slightly undulating landscape. To the north the terrain rises to the wooded ridge of the Donnet . The highest point of Betaucourt is reached on its southern roof at 283 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

Neighboring municipalities of Betaucourt are Villars-le-Pautel in the north, Aisey-et-Richecourt and Ormoy in the east, Cendrecourt and Jussey in the south and Raincourt in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Betaucourt belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . It formed a fiefdom that was dependent on the Bourbévelle rule. In the 13th century, rulership passed to the Cherlieu Monastery . Together with the Franche-Comté , Betaucourt finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. A blast furnace was founded here around 1750 and was in operation until the end of the 19th century. Today Betaucourt is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Jusséen, which comprises 17 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Betaucourt was rebuilt in the 19th century. The furnishings include a richly carved wooden pulpit (17th century), altars and statues from the 18th century and various grave slabs.

The Saint-Brice chapel stands in the open field north of the village.

Other attractions include three lavoirs and the ruins of the medieval Betaucourt Castle.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Betaucourt was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Jussey to Corre . Further road connections exist with Cendrecourt and Raincourt.
