Chauvirey-le-Châtel is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chauvirey-le-Châtel is located at an altitude of 265 m above sea level, two and a half kilometers south of Vitrey-sur-Mance and about 35 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-western part of the department, slightly elevated above the confluence of the Ruisseau du Moivre in the Ougeotte , in the eastern foothills of the Langres plateau.

The area of the 11.76 km² municipal area covers a section of the Langres plateau west of the upper Saône valley . From west to east the area is crossed by the valley of the Ougeotte, which provides drainage to the Saône. The flat floodplain is usually less than 500 meters wide and averages 250 m. The valley is flanked on both sides by the heights that form the eastern foothills of the Langres plateau. These are subdivided by the valley cuts of various side streams of the Ougeotte: The Ruisseau du Moivre and the Ruisseau le Saupiquet (eastern border) flow from the north .

To the north of the Ougeotte Valley, the municipal soil extends to a mainly agricultural plateau (up to 320 m). South of the valley, the slope to the La Quarte plateau rises. This is mostly forested. In the Bois de l'Hourie , the highest point of Chauvirey-le-Châtel is reached at 372 m. With a narrow tip, the community area extends southeast to the Charaumont (317 m). In geological and tectonic terms, these heights consist of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

Neighboring municipalities of Chauvirey-le-Châtel are Vitrey-sur-Mance in the north, Montigny-lès-Cherlieu in the east, Chauvirey-le-Vieil , Cintrey and La Rochelle in the south and La Quarte and Ouge in the west.

history

Remains from Gallo-Roman times indicate a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The existence of the noble von Chauvirey family has been documented since the 11th century. In the 14th century the rule was divided into Châtel-Dessus and Châtel-Dessus. As the aristocratic family subsequently went out, the lords experienced various changes of ownership. Together with Franche-Comté , Chauvirey-le-Châtel finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1808 when Chauvirey-le-Châtel and Chauvirey-le-Vieil merged to form the municipality of Chauvirey-le-Châtel-et-Chauvirey-le-Vieil. Since 1845, however, both localities have again formed independent communities. Today Chauvirey-le-Châtel is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Jusséen, which comprises 17 villages .

Attractions

The Gothic church Nativité Notre-Dame dates from the 14th century and was partially rebuilt in the 18th century. The valuable furnishings include grave slabs from the 15th and 16th centuries, a richly carved wooden altar from the 17th century and furniture from the 18th century.

Remains of the two castles are there: The Château Dessus was destroyed in the 19th century. The Château Dessous was rebuilt in the 17th century and later converted into a farm. The chapel of the Château Dessous , the Saint-Hubert chapel , was built in 1484 for the Olifant of St. Hubert and is now classified as a monument historique . It houses an altar from the 15th century. A small museum shows an exhibition about local history.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chauvirey-le-Châtel was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Vitrey-sur-Mance to Membrey . Further road connections exist with Montigny-lès-Cherlieu, Ouge and La Quarte.
