geography

Malans is located at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, three kilometers southeast of Pesmes and about 33 kilometers west of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, slightly elevated on the northern edge of the valley plain of the Ognon , north of the ridge of the Massif de la Serre .

The area of the 6.75 km² large municipal area includes a section of the lower Ognon Valley. The southern border mostly runs along the Ognon. This flows here with several turns to the west through an alluvial plain , which has a width of about three kilometers and averages 195 m. It is mainly used for agriculture. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley floor and a gently rising slope onto the adjacent, slightly undulating plateau. These hills are made up of tertiary sediments . At 280 m, the highest point in Malans is reached on the ridge of Le Chânoy . To the north, the municipality extends to the wooded area of the Bois du Gâtis .

Neighboring municipalities of Malans are Pesmes in the north, Bard-lès-Pesmes and Bresilley in the east, Thervay in the south and Dammartin-Marpain in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Malans belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rulership was held by the Lords of Pesmes. The village church was confirmed by the Pope in the monastery of Saint-Germain in Auxerre in 1153 . A hospital was founded here in the 13th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Malans finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Malans is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes du Val de Pesmes, which comprises 18 villages .

Attractions

Château Sainte-Marie

The Saint-Laurent church, originally built in the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 19th century on the plan of a Latin cross . It has a rich interior, including stone and wooden statues from the 16th century, a richly carved pulpit and paintings from the 18th century.

There are two castles to the west of the village. The 16th century Château de Malans was extensively restored and changed in the 19th century. The second castle, the Château Sainte Marie, from the beginning of the 19th century (built by the inventor of the steamship, Claude-François-Dorothée, marquis de Jouffroy d'Abbans) is somewhat more recent. In his park there is a collection with over 50 conceptual and concrete monumental sculptures. Adjoining the park, in the fall of 2012, the municipality of Malan and the club have Association Ile Art with the Ile Art Malans set up another sculpture park.

With 134 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Malans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (402 people were still counted in 1886), only relatively small fluctuations were recorded in the last few decades.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Malans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Pesmes to Thervay. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 14 km away. Further road connections exist with Bresilley and Bard-lès-Pesmes.
