geography

Sornay is located at an altitude of 203 m above sea level, six kilometers west of Marnay and about 25 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, on both sides of the Ruisseau de la Fontaine de Magney on the northern edge of the valley plain of the Ognon , on the southwest edge of the Monts de Gy.

The area of the 6.29 km² municipal area includes a section of the lower Ognon Valley. The southern border mostly runs along the Ognon. This flows here with numerous turns to the west through an alluvial plain that has a width of about three kilometers and averages 200 m. It is mainly used for agriculture. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northwards over the valley floor and the adjacent, gently sloping slopes of the Bois du Bège and the Bois de Bay , which form the most south-westerly foothills of the Monts de Gy. These hills are made up of tertiary sediments . At 275 m, the highest point in Sornay is reached in the Bois du Bège. Between the heights of Bois du Bège and Bois de Bay is the broad basin of the Ruisseau de la Fontaine de Magney, a short side stream of the Ognon.

Sornay includes the Banne settlement (198 m) in the Ognon valley. Neighboring communities of Sornay are Hugier and Bay in the north, Chenevrey-et-Morogne in the east, Jallerange , Pagney and Vitreux in the south and Montagney in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Sornay belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . A noble family named Sornay is documented in the 12th and 13th centuries. Together with Franche-Comté , Sornay finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The Banne settlement belonged to the Corneux monastery, whose abbot founded a blast furnace here in 1678. Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Sornay was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), while the metalworking trade had settled in bans. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Marnay to Pesmes . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 km away. There are other road connections with Pagney, Chancey and Bay.
