Velle-le-Châtel was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. Today there are a few local small businesses, including a company in the precision engineering and metalworking sector. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Vesoul to Fresne-Saint-Mamès . There are other road connections with Clans, Baignes and Mont-le-Vernois. Velle-le-Châtel has a train station on the now disused railway line from Vesoul to Gray.
