The area of the 7.64 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The area is bordered in the north by the Morte and in the west by the valley of its tributary Teuillot . The Morte flows through a roughly one kilometer wide lowland and provides drainage to the west to the Saône. The community area extends south to the adjacent plateau, which is an average of 220 m. The double municipality consists of the two localities Saint-Loup (222 m) and Nantouard (205 m), both on the plateau south of the Morte. history

Saint-Loup is mentioned for the first time in 1282. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Saint-Loup formed a fiefdom to which Nantouard belonged since 1292. The castle, built around 1292, was set on fire in 1637 during the Thirty Years' War by troops of Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar . Together with Franche-Comté , Saint-Loup finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the place was called Saint-Loup-lès-Gray to distinguish it from other communities of the same name. There was a change of territory in 1972 when the previously independent Nantouard merged with Saint-Loup to form the dual municipality of Saint-Loup-Nantouard. Today Saint-Loup-Nantouard is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes du Val de Gray, which comprises 16 villages .

Attractions

The church of Saint-Loup was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. It is richly decorated , including a baptismal font from the 15th century, two gilded statues (18th century) and various relics from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Château de Saint-Loup, which originally dates from the late 13th century, is located near the Morte. Tower foundations have been preserved from this period. The new castle was built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Also noteworthy are the chapel with its Gothic furnishings and the large landscaped park.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Loup-Nantouard was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Velesmes-Échevanne to Sauvigney-lès-Gray.
