The valley is flanked on both sides by relatively steep slopes that lead to the adjacent, partly wooded, partly meadowland heights: in the south the Bois de la Craye (366 m), in the east the Valdoie , on the 376 m the The highest point is reached by Colombotte, in the northeast the Planches (320 m) and in the northwest the Bois de Carneillet . In geological and tectonic terms, the area north of the Colombine consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). The heights south of the Colombine are made up of a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period .
Colombotte's neighboring municipalities are Saulx and Creveney in the north, Châtenois and Velleminfroy in the east and Calmoutier in the south and west.

Today Colombotte is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Grands Bois, which comprises 12 towns .
