Ancier is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Ancier is located at an altitude of 192 m above sea level, three kilometers east of Gray and about 38 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the plain of Gray, at the outlet of the Dhuys brook into the broad valley of the Saône .

The area of the 4.42 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône. The northern part of the area is taken up by the alluvial plain of the Saône, which averages 187 m. It used to form a wide floodplain and swamp area. This is drained through the Dhuys and the Morte and various drainage ditches. To the south, a step leads over to the adjacent plateau, which is around 30 m higher than the valley floor. At 229 m, the highest point of Ancier is reached on the hill southeast of the village. To the east, the municipal area extends into the wooded area of the Bois de Belle Combe . From a geological point of view, the Ancier subsoil consists of alternating layers of sandy, marly and calcareous layers from the Tertiary and Upper Jurassic periods .

Neighboring communities of Ancier are Gray in the west and north, Saint-Broing in the northeast, Velesmes-Échevanne in the southeast and Battrans in the south.

history

Church with a bell tower

Ancier is first mentioned in a document in 1186. The former swampy area was drained and made arable by the monks of the Corneux monastery . In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté, Ancier finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in the first half of the 19th century: In 1807, the previously independent Corneux was merged with Ancier. In 1841 Corneux was separated again and added to the municipality of Saint-Broing. Today, Ancier is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes du Val de Gray, which comprises 16 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Ancier was largely rebuilt in the 19th century, whereby the bell tower from the 18th century was retained.

With 502 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Ancier is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 335 people), the population continued to grow steadily from 1960 to 1990. Since then, the number of inhabitants has decreased slightly again.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Ancier was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are various local small-scale businesses, including a company that specializes in the manufacture of pipes. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in Gray and in the other larger localities in the area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main D474 road from Gray to Vesoul . Other road connections exist with Beaujeu and Battrans.
