Échenoz-le-Sec is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Échenoz-le-Sec is located at an altitude of 313 m above sea level, about ten kilometers south of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the south-west of the Vellefaux basin, in the hilly landscape that extends between the river valleys of Saône in the north-west and Ognon in the south, at the east foot of the Bois du Chanois .
The area of the municipal area of 15.47 km² includes a section in the hilly area east of the Saône basin. The central part of the area is occupied by a basin that is on average 310 m. It has a width of about two kilometers and is oriented towards the southwest-northeast. Agricultural use predominates here, while the surrounding heights are predominantly forest-covered. The basin is flanked in the west by the summit of the Bois du Chanois , on which the highest point of Échenoz-le-Sec is reached at 469 m. To the south, the wooded heights of the Bois de Chaillot and the Bois de Filain lead to the catchment area of the Ognon. The eastern boundary is the range of the Bois de Sainte-Anne (up to 405 m). The area consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marly and calcareous layers from the middle Jurassic period . In the entire municipality there are no noteworthy surface running waters because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.
The hamlet of Les Gambes (360 m) on the southern roof of the Bois de Sainte-Anne belongs to Échenoz-le-Sec . Neighboring municipalities of Échenoz-le-Sec are Velleguindry-et-Levrecey and Vellefaux in the north, Filain in the east, Authoison and Pennesières in the south and Le Magnoray in the west.
history
The municipality of Échenoz was already settled in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the Dolmen de la Grosse-Pierre. Échenoz-le-Sec was first mentioned in 1174 under the name Eschino Sicco . The names Eschenodo (1350) and Eschenod le sec (1672) have come down to us from a later period . The place name is made up of the word components es (contraction of en les ) and chenau (regional name for a canalised watercourse).
In the Middle Ages, Échenoz-le-Sec belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Land ownership and rights in the village had been owned by the La Charité monastery and the Bellevaux monastery since the 12th century . Together with the Franche-Comté , Échenoz-le-Sec finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Échenoz-le-Sec is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Chanois, which comprises six villages .
Attractions
The village church of Échenoz-le-Sec was built in 1775 on the site of a previous medieval building from the 13th century. Opposite the church is the 19th century Mairie (parish hall). The former mansion was destroyed by fire in 1870 and fell into ruins. In the center of the village there are some houses from the 17th and 18th centuries that show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône. The approximately 3000 year old Dolmen de la Grosse-Pierre, which stands on the border with Le Magnoray, is classified as a Monument historique .

With 298 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Échenoz-le-Sec is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (382 people were still counted in 1881), population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s. Since then the population has almost doubled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Échenoz-le-Sec was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road N57 that goes from Vesoul to Besançon . In the Échenoz-le-Sec area, it has been expanded to four lanes in sections. There are other road connections with Vellefaux, Filain and Le Magnoray.
