Chaux-la-Lotière is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Chaux-la-Lotière is located at an altitude of 250 m above sea level, eight kilometers west-southwest of Rioz and about 16 kilometers north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, north of the valley of the Ognon in the lowlands of the Ruisseau de l'Étang du Vau at the southern foot of the heights of the Bois du Chanois .

The area of ​​the 8.88 km² municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The central part of the area is crossed from north to south by the valley of the Ruisseau de l'Étang du Vau , which provides drainage to the Ognon. A plateau spreads out on both sides of this valley, averaging 260 m and sloping slightly to the south. It consists of deposits from the tertiary . The area consists mainly of arable and meadow land. To the north, the municipality extends into the hilly area of ​​the Bois du Chanois (up to 330 m) and to the top of Rochefort. Here, at 338 m, the highest point in Chaux-la-Lotière is reached.

Two hamlet settlements belong to Chaux-la-Lotière:

  • La Lotière (225 m) in the valley of the Ruisseau de l'Étang du Vau
  • Rochefort (280 m) on the plateau west of the Ruisseau de l'Étang du Vau

Neighboring municipalities of Chaux-la-Lotière are Cordonnet and Montarlot-lès-Rioz in the north, Boult in the east and Boulot in the south.

history

The traces of a camp site on the Châtelard point to an early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, Chaux-la-Lotière was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The Lords of Boult held local rule over the village. Together with Franche-Comté , Chaux-la-Lotière finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today the village is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .

With 454 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chaux-la-Lotière is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (249 people were counted in 1886), strong population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has almost tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chaux-la-Lotière was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The most important employer today is the Plimétal sheet metal factory. There are also some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The place is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Boult to Bonnevent. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 km away. Further road connections exist with Boulot and Cordonnet.
