From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the alluvial plain , which is on average 255 m and is mainly used for agriculture. Further to the north follows an undulating landscape, which is subdivided by the lowlands of the Ruisseau de Chassey and its source streams. Almost the entire northern part of the municipal area is forested and includes the summit of Mont Jésus (350 m) and the heights of the Bois de Moustier and the Bois de Chassey . These hills consist of limestone layers from the upper Jurassic period . In the far north, on the Montaigu , the highest point of Chassey-lès-Montbozon is reached at 408 m.

Chassey-lès-Montbozon has two hamlet settlements and various individual farms:

  • La Forge-de-Bonnal (254 m) in the valley of the Ognon
  • La Maison-du-Vau (345 m) on a plateau between the forests of Bois de Chassey and Bois du Petit Pas

Neighboring municipalities of Chassey-lès-Montbozon are Vallerois-le-Bois in the north, Esprels and Pont-sur-l'Ognon in the east, Bonnal and Tressandans in the south and Thieffrans and Dampierre-sur-Linotte in the west.

history

Chassey-lès-Montbozon: View of the village and the church

The municipality of Chassey-lès-Montbozon was settled very early. The first evidence of human presence comes from the Neolithic. Various finds and wall foundations from Gallo-Roman times have been preserved. The remains of an early Christian church from the Merovingian period are of archaeological importance .

Chassey is first mentioned in 1183 under the name Chace; from 1406 the name Chacey has been handed down. The place name goes back to the Latin personal name Cassius and means something like estate of Cassius. In the Middle Ages, Chassey formed its own rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the 17th century there were blast furnaces and several blacksmiths in La Forge . However, the blast furnace was shut down around 1840 and the forge was abandoned around 20 years later, after which the settlement partially fell apart.

By decree, the previously independent municipality of La Maison-du-Vau was incorporated into Chassey on March 31, 1806. There used to be a grangie of the Templar Order here. Since 2000, Chassey-lès-Montbozon has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon, which comprises 21 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Gengoul church was built between 1750 and 1759 and has a bell from 1767, which is classified as a monument historique . The château dates from the 18th century. Nearby is a Calvaire that was built in the 17th century. Other sights include two fountains: the Fontaine du Haut (1896), which served as a wash house and cattle trough, and the Fontaine du Bas from 1802, which was later covered.

With a population of 217 (January 1, 2017), Chassey-lès-Montbozon is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (485 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chassey-lès-Montbozon was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now various small and medium-sized businesses, especially in the fields of precision engineering and the manufacture of agricultural machines. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. Several quarry ponds, which are now part of an amusement park (water sports, sandy beaches), bear witness to the former sand pits in the Ognon valley.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Montbozon to Esprels. Another road connection exists with Bonnal.
