In the Middle Ages Neuvelle belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rulership was mainly held by the Lords of Oiselay. A small part of the property belonged to the La Charité monastery. Together with Franche-Comté , Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

The Cistercian monastery La Charité was founded in 1133 and formed the spiritual center of the region. It was built in 1477 by the troops of the French King Louis XI. Looted, destroyed in 1569 by the Duke of Zweibrücken's troops and repealed during the French Revolution in 1789. The hamlet of La Charité was merged with Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité in 1812.
