Mont-le-Vernois is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Mont-le-Vernois is located at an altitude of 265 m above sea level, about seven kilometers west-southwest of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, on a terrace on the western slope of the heights that rise between the river valleys of Saône and Ognon , in a panoramic position above the upper Saône basin.

The area of the 7.76 km² municipal area covers a section in the area of the hilly landscape between Saône in the north and Ognon in the south. The area is naturally divided into two parts. The north-western part includes the terrace of Mont, which is divided by the valley of the Ruisseau des Dindes . This rises in the Le Vernois basin and drains the area to the northwest via the Baignotte to the Durgeon . To the north the slope gradually descends to the valley basin of Baignotte and Durgeon. This section is made up of tertiary sediments . Agricultural use prevails here.

To the south and southeast, a 100 m high steep slope leads over to the adjacent plateau. It consists of limestone sediments from the middle Jurassic period . The high plateau (located at an average of 350 m) consists mainly of forest (including the Bois de Nancroix ). In the far south-east the community area extends to the crest of the Côte d'Andelarre , on which the highest point of Mont-le-Vernois is reached at 403 m.

The community consists of two districts:

  • Mont (265 m) on the terrace above the Saône basin
  • Le Vernois (260 m) in a basin of the Ruisseau des Dindes

Neighboring municipalities of Mont-le-Vernois are Chariez in the north, Andelarre in the east, Andelarrot in the south and Velle-le-Châtel and Boursières in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the area was already populated in Gallo-Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Mont belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The place formed its own rule, which in 1740 was elevated to a marquisate. Together with Franche-Comté , Mont finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Mont-le-Vernois is a member of the 19 localities community association Communauté de communes de l'agglomération de Vesoul .

Attractions

Today's Château de Mont consists of two buildings. These are flanked by towers that once belonged to the medieval manor house. The Saint-Antoine chapel is in the hamlet of Le Vernois.

With 171 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Mont-le-Vernois is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (361 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Mont-le-Vernois was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The once important viticulture has practically disappeared today. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The village is away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from the D13 départemental road from Vesoul to Fresne-Saint-Mamès . There are other road connections with Velle-le-Châtel, Boursières and Andelarre.
