Chaumercenne is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chaumercenne is located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level, five kilometers east-northeast of Pesmes and about 31 kilometers west of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department on a broad ridge north of the Ognon valley and east of the Saône plain .

The area of ​​the 4.95 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape between the valley plains of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north. The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 270 m. It is made up of tertiary sediments and is mainly used for agriculture, but there are also some forest areas. In the north the municipal area extends into the forest of the Bois de Riand , in the south to the Bois du Gâtis . At 292 m, the highest point of Chaumercenne is reached here. There are no surface watercourses in the whole area.

Neighboring communities of Chaumercenne are Valay in the north, Montagney in the east, Bard-lès-Pesmes in the south and Pesmes and La Résie-Saint-Martin in the west.

history

Chaumercenne is first mentioned in a document in 1231. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and within it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Pesmes, but the Acey monastery also owned goods in the municipality. In 1358 the rule came to Jean de Bard, later to the La Baume family and in the 18th century to the Petremand von Valay. Together with Franche-Comté , Chaumercenne finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Chaumercenne is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Val de Pesmes, which comprises 18 villages .

Church Notre-Dame de la Nativité

The Notre-Dame de la Nativité church was built in the 16th century in the late Gothic style and has a rich interior, including a statue of the Virgin Mary from the 15th century (Burgundy school). An oratoire (1625) stands on the road to Valay. The castle with its two square towers dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The townscape is characterized by numerous houses from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the traditional Haute-Saône style.

With 187 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Chaumercenne is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (304 people were counted in 1891), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chaumercenne was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D12 road from Pesmes to Gy . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 16 km away. Other road links exist with Valay, Marnay and Ougney .
