Ranzevelle is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Ranzevelle is located at an altitude of 237 m above sea level, eleven kilometers northeast of Jussey and about 34 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-western part of the department, on a terrace surrounded by the Saône , east of the hills of the Bois Saint-Julien .
The area of the 2.38 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the upper Saône valley. The northern, eastern and southern borders run along the Saône, which flows here in a large arc around the Ranzevelle terrace. Its alluvial valley has a width of up to 1.5 kilometers and averages 220 m. The river is canalised and developed into a waterway, northeast of the village the Côney and with it the Canal de l'Est flow into the Saône Valley. The area is mainly used for agriculture. The terrace of Ranzevelle, on which the highest elevation of the place is reached with 257 m, consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).
Neighboring communities of Ranzevelle are Corre in the north, Ormoy in the south and Aisey-et-Richecourt in the southwest.
history
In the Middle Ages, Ranzevelle belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Jonvelle . Thiébaud von Jonvelle gave the Clairefontaine monastery a quarter of the tithe of Ranzevelle in 1257. In 1474 the place was sacked by troops under Tremoille. Together with Franche-Comté , Ranzevelle finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The castle of Ranzevelle was built in the 18th century and has a castle chapel. Some houses from the 16th and 17th centuries in the traditional Haute-Saône style have been preserved. The Calvaire was built in 1694.

With 17 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Ranzevelle is the smallest municipality in the Haute-Saône department. During the entire 20th century, the population decreased significantly (in 1901 there were 53 people).
Economy and Infrastructure
Ranzevelle is still today a predominantly agricultural village (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding). Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares near a department road that leads from Jussey to Corre.
