Mairie Vantoux

Vantoux-et-Longevelle is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vantoux-et-Longevelle is located at an altitude of 230 m above sea level, four kilometers northeast of Gy and about 26 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in a hollow on the northern edge of the Monts de Gy, on the eastern edge of the plain of Gy.

The area of the 9.67 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The southern part of the community is occupied by a wide hollow that opens to the west to the Gy plain. It is mainly used for agriculture. The village stream, which joins the Morte at Vellefrey, provides drainage . Towards the south-east, the terrain gradually rises to the heights of the Monts de Gy, which mainly consist of Cretaceous sediments. The highest point of Vantoux-et-Longevelle is reached here at 273 m. To the north-west, the community area extends into the mainly wooded landscape of the Petits Bois de Gy and the Bois de Vantoux (up to 260 m), which are only slightly in relief and are made up of tertiary deposits. This part of the municipality lies in the catchment area of the Petite Morte.

The double community consists of the villages of Vantoux (230 m) in a hollow on the edge of the Monts de Gy and Longevelle (225 m) on the eastern edge of the Petits Bois de Gy. Neighboring municipalities of Vantoux-et-Longevelle are La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain and Étrelles-et-la-Montbleuse in the north, Villers-Chemin-et-Mont-lès-Étrelles and Velleclaire in the east, Bucey-lès-Gy in the south and Vellefrey -et-Vellefrange to the west.

history

Excavations that began in 2008 have shown that the municipality of Vantoux-et-Longevelle was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Various tools and ceramic fragments as well as the remains of a Neolithic furnace were discovered.

In the Middle Ages, Vantoux and Longevelle belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . While the local rule of Vantoux was held by the Lords of Gray and the Archbishops of Besançon, Longevelle was part of the Oiselay domain. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1806, Vantoux and Longevelle merged to form what is now the dual community. Today Vantoux-et-Longevelle is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Monts de Gy, which comprises 20 villages . The parish does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Bucey-lès-Gy.

Attractions

The Vantoux Mairie (parish hall) was built in 1873. In front of it is a fountain with the statue of Joan of Arc. The Fontaine Xérès, a round fountain with a large statue, in the lower part of the village is also worth seeing. The Calvaire dates from 1724.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vantoux-et-Longevelle was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D474, which leads from Gray via Gy to Vesoul . There are other road connections with Velleclaire, La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain and Vellefrey.
