Preigney is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Preigney is located at an altitude of 310 m above sea level, six kilometers south of Vitrey-sur-Mance and about 33 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-western part of the department, in a hollow on the high plateau, which belongs to the eastern foothills of the plateau of Langres, between the valley cuts of Ougeotte in the north and Sorlière in the south.

The area of the 12.18 km² municipal area covers a section of the Langres plateau west of the upper Saône valley . The main part of the area is occupied by the Preigney plateau, which is on average 320 m. It is mainly used for agriculture, but there are also larger areas of forest, especially along the municipal boundaries. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the plateau consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). The valley of the Sorlière begins south of Preigney and provides drainage for the area via the Gourgeonne to the Saône. It is dammed up to the Étang de Cintrey-Preigney (local recreation area).

Preigney is flanked in the north by the plateau of the Charaumont and the Bois de Montigny , in the east by the ridge of the Grand Bois , on which the highest point of Preigney is reached at 372 m. It belongs to the Forêt Domaniale de Cherlieu . To the northeast, the municipality extends into the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Cherlieu .

Neighboring communities of Preigney are Chauvirey-le-Vieil in the north, Montigny-lès-Cherlieu in the east, Melin and Malvillers in the south and Cintrey in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Preigney belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Since 1196, the nearby Cherlieu monastery shared control of the place with a secular ruler. At the beginning of the 16th century, the residents were granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , Preigney finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Preigney was rebuilt in the 18th century. It houses a 15th-century statue of Notre-Dame de Cherlieu that was transferred from Cherlieu Monastery, as well as 18th-century paintings. In the village there is a lavoir from the 19th century that was once used as a wash house and cattle trough. The round pool is protected on one side by a stone wall and is covered.

With 108 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Preigney is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (477 people were counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Preigney was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road N19 that goes from Vesoul to Langres . Further road connections exist with Vitrey-sur-Mance, Cintrey, Malvillers and Montigny-lès-Cherlieu.
