Montarlot-lès-Rioz is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montarlot-lès-Rioz is located at an altitude of 265 m above sea level, six kilometers west of Rioz and about 20 km north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, in a niche on the western edge of the Tounolle valley, between the forest heights of the Bois du Chanois in the west and the Forêt de Sorans in the east.

The area of the municipal area of 9.66 km² covers a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the northwest. The central part of the area is crossed in a north-south direction by the valley of the Tounolle, which provides drainage to the Ognon. The Tounolle is fed by short side streams that subdivide the area. The valley is flanked in the east by the extensive forest area of the Forêt de Sorans (up to 360 m). In geological terms, the heights consist of an alternation of calcareous and sandy-marly layers from the Upper Jurassic . To the west, the municipal area extends over the ridge of the Bois du Chanois , on which the highest point of Montarlot-lès-Rioz is reached at 365 m, and on the plateau of Les Aiguilles (360 m). The western boundary runs in the valley of the Ruisseau de l'Étang du Vau .

Neighboring communities of Montarlot-lès-Rioz are Fondremand and Trésilley in the north, Sorans-lès-Breurey in the east, Boult and Chaux-la-Lotière in the south and Cordonnet in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Montarlot belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule over the village was held by the family of the same name until the 16th century. In 1567 the Montarlot domain was incorporated into the Oiselay domain. Together with Franche-Comté , Montarlot finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today the village is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .

With 285 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Montarlot-lès-Rioz is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (251 people were counted in 1891), strong population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montarlot-lès-Rioz was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The former wire drawing shop was closed. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Boult to Trésilley. Further road connections exist with Rioz and Cordonnet.
