Mailley-et-chazelot is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Mailley-et-Chazelot is located at an altitude of 292 m above sea level, about twelve kilometers southwest of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the center of the department, in a wide hollow in the hill country that extends between the Saône basin and the river valley of the Ognon .

The area of the 25.03 km² municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Saône in the north-west and Ognon in the south. The central part of the area is occupied by the Mailley basin, which averages 290 m. It is approximately 1.5 km wide and opens towards the northwest to the Saône basin. The valley basin is predominantly made up of arable and meadow land. To the northeast, the hollow leads over to the Vesoul basin.

The hollow is flanked by the predominantly wooded heights of Mailley. In the north, the demarcation runs in the Bois du Mont (up to 370 m). To the east and south-east, the municipal area extends over the height of Croix de la Roche (442 m) and the Bois des Chaillots to the plateau of the Grands Bois de Mailley . Here, at 463 m, Mailley-et-Chazelot's highest point is reached. In the southwest, the Chaillolet (362 m) marks the limit. From a geological point of view, the hill country consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the middle and upper Jurassic period , which are disturbed by several faults oriented in a south-west-north-east direction. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

The municipality consists of the main town Mailley (292 m) and the hamlet of Chazelot (325 m) in a hollow between Chaillolet and Bois des Chaillots. Neighboring municipalities of Mailley-et-Chazelot are Rosey and Baignes in the north, Velleguindry-et-Levrecey and Le Magnoray in the east, Pennesières , Hyet , Fondremand and Maizières in the south and Grandvelle-et-le-Perrenot and Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité in the West.

history

A burial ground from the Merovingian period indicates an early settlement of the municipality. Mailley is first mentioned in a document in 1235. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . At first Mailley was owned by the Abbots of Luxeuil , later it became the center of a separate rule. The noble von Mailley family died out in 1414. Together with the Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. There was a change of area in 1808 when Mailley and Chazelot, which is mentioned in writing as early as 1228, merged to form the dual parish Mailley-et-Chazelot. Today Mailley-et-Chazelot is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Combes, which comprises 22 localities .

The Saint-Nicet church was rebuilt in 1770. It houses remarkable furnishings , including a baptismal font (16th century), statues and a richly carved wooden altar from the 17th and 18th centuries, the relics of Saint-Roch (15th century) and various grave slabs.

The old town center is characterized by numerous town houses from the 16th to 18th centuries, which show the characteristic style of the Haute-Saône.

Mailley had two mansions: while the so-called Château d'En-Bas (16th century) is still well preserved, only the remains of a tower and the surrounding wall are visible of the Château d'En-Haut.
