Vauchoux is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vauchoux is located at an altitude of 212 m above sea level, three kilometers south-southwest of Port-sur-Saône and about ten kilometers west-northwest of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, on the eastern edge of the Saône lowlands , at the entrance of the Scyotte into the Saône valley.

The area of the 4.64 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The western border always runs along the Saône, which here draws an arc extending to the south. The alluvial valley of the Saône averages 208 m and is approximately two kilometers wide. The river has been developed into a waterway.

From the course of the river, the municipal area extends eastward over the floodplain into the Scyotte valley, which flows into the Saône near the village. This valley is flanked on both sides by plateau-like hills, which consist of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . North of the Scyotte is the extensive wooded area of the Bois du Marquis , in which the highest point of Vauchoux is reached at 262 m. To the south, the municipality reaches the height of the Côte l'Oison (251 m) and with a narrow strip down to the valley of the Durgeon . The fertile soils of the valley and the Côte l'Oison are mainly used for agriculture.

Neighboring municipalities of Vauchoux are Port-sur-Saône in the north, Scye in the east, Montigny-lès-Vesoul and Pontcey in the south and Chemilly and Ferrières-lès-Scey in the west.

history

Grave finds next to today's cemetery indicate a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages Vauchoux belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rulership was initially held by the von Traves and later by Scey . Together with Franche-Comté , Vauchoux finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Under the rule of the noble von Bauffremont family, the residents were granted freedom rights in 1788. Today Vauchoux is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes de la Saône jolie, which comprises 16 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Léger church was built in 1848 and has a remarkable image of the Madonna. In the cemetery there is a cross dated 1606. Other sights include the castle, which now houses a restaurant and is surrounded by a large park, as well as the Lavoir (former wash house and cattle trough) from 1895.

Economy and Infrastructure

Vauchoux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. Today there are a few local small businesses, including a packaging company. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Vesoul area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Port-sur-Saône to Pontcey. Another road connection is with Scye.
