Amance is a commune in the Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté and Canton Port-sur-Saône in Arrondissement of Vesoul .

geography

Amance is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, five kilometers northwest of Faverney and about 20 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, in the valley of the Superbe on both sides of the river, east of the Saône valley.

The area of the 17.54 km² municipal area covers a section in the gently undulating landscape east of the upper Saône valley . From north to south the area is crossed by the alluvial valley of the Superbe , which provides drainage to the Saône. The valley level is on average 220 m and has a width of about one kilometer. In the area of Amance, the Superbe takes on the Rivière Vieille from the east .

The valley is flanked on both sides by plateaus that are around 260 m. On the plateau on the edge of the heights of Saint-Rémy in the very north-east, the highest peak of Amance is reached at 287 m. Agricultural use predominates in the valley lowlands. On the plateaus there is a loose structure of arable and meadow land and forest. Larger forest areas are located on the municipal boundaries. The southern boundary runs in the extensive forests of the Bois de la Raie and the Bois des Balières . The municipal area extends with a narrow tip to the southwest as far as the Saône lowland. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

In addition to the actual town, Amance includes the following settlements:

  • Le Magny (225 m) west of the Superbe
  • Beauregard (217 m) in the Saône lowlands on the western edge of the Bois des Balières
  • the northern part of Port-d'Atelier-Amance (217 m) in the Saône lowlands on the western edge of the Bois des Balières

Neighboring communities of Amance are Contréglise and Senoncourt in the north, Menoux in the east, Faverney in the south and Baulay and Buffignécourt in the west.

history

Remains of a Roman watchtower in the Bois du Châtelard indicate a very early settlement of the place. Amance is first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. At that time the settlement consisted of the three villages Le Magny, L'Aître and Le Mont Sainte-Marie. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . It formed the center of a fiefdom that was under the Free County. Faverney Monastery also had property and rights in the place. In the 16th century the rule belonged to the Rye family, who favored the introduction of the Reformation and founded the brotherhood of Saint Barbara. Together with Franche-Comté , Amance finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Amance is a member of the community association Communauté de communes Agir Ensemble, which comprises 13 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Laurent church was built in the 18th century. It has valuable furnishings from this period, including the richly carved pulpit and altar , paneling and priestly vestments from the 17th century. The Sainte-Barbe chapel also dates from the 18th century.

The center of the village is characterized by several houses in the Renaissance style, including the Maison Bûcheron with turrets. Other important structures are the Maison Espagnole and the Mairie-Justice (municipal administration and court). A large square tower testifies to the former fortification. Also worth seeing is the covered lavoir from the 19th century, which was once used as a wash house and cattle trough.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Amance was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small businesses, mainly in the precision engineering, wood processing and construction industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Faverney to Vauvillers . Further road connections exist with Baulay, Corre and Saint-Rémy.
