geography

Noroy-le-Bourg is located at an altitude of 372 m above sea level, about eleven kilometers east of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, on a plateau between the heights of Champfleury in the south and Les Crays de Valdemouge in the northeast.

The area of the municipal area of 31.78 km² covers a section in the undulating landscape between the basin of Vesoul in the west and the plain of Lure in the east. The central part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 360 m. It is mainly used for agriculture, but also has some forest areas. This plateau is dominated by the heights of Les Crays de Valdemouge (438 m), Champfleury (at 447 m the highest point in Noroy-le-Bourg) and Mont Bloizeau (428 m). They are made up of a resistant layer of limestone from the middle Jurassic period . To the west, the community area extends into the extensive forest of the Bois de Noroy . The heights of the Grande Vaivre (391 m) and the Bois de Replan join further south . In the far south, Noroy-le-Bourg has a share in the Vaivre valley.

There are only a few surface rivers, as the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. Karst phenomena such as caves, shafts and sinkholes occur in several places. To the north of the village is the basin of the Ruisseau de Denan (tributary of the Colombine ). In the northeast, the municipal soil extends to the headwaters of the Lauzin (tributary of the Ognon ), while the wide basin in the east is drained by the Ruisseau de l'Étang . This part of the municipality consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

In addition to the actual village, Noroy-le-Bourg has several farm settlements:

  • Les Mauvais (300 m) in a hollow south of the Bois de Noroy
  • Les Coulerys (324 m) in a hollow south of the Grande Vaivre
  • Les Henrys (372 m) on a knoll north of the Vallerois valley
  • Les Regardots (290 m) on the northern edge of the Vallerois valley

Neighboring municipalities of Noroy-le-Bourg are Calmoutier and Liévans in the north, Autrey-lès-Cerre and Cerre-lès-Noroy in the east, Vallerois-le-Bois and Dampierre-sur-Linotte in the south and Villers-le-Sec , Colombe- lès-Vesoul and Dampvalley-lès-Colombe to the west.

history

Remains of a Roman traffic route indicate an early settlement of the area. Roman wall foundations were discovered in the La Tiolère corridor. Noroy is first mentioned in a document in 1049. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Although dependent on the Archdiocese of Besançon, Noroy developed into its own rule. The place was fortified in the Middle Ages. Together with Franche-Comté , Noroy finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Noroy-le-Bourg is the administrative seat of the community association Communauté de communes des Grands Bois, comprising twelve localities .

Attractions

The three-nave village church was rebuilt in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. It has a statue of St. Stephen (17th century) as well as chalices, a ciborium and a monstrance (18th century) made of silver. Two stone crosses are dated 1546 and 1665. Some remains of the old walling have been preserved. Other sights include the Mairie-École building (municipal administration and school, classified as a monument historique ) and the village fountain from 1838.

With 497 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Noroy-le-Bourg is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1008 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Noroy-le-Bourg was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses, mainly in the wood processing and precision engineering industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Vesoul.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Saulx to Villersexel . Other road connections exist with Vallerois-le-Bois, Frotey-lès-Vesoul and Mollans .
