Saulx is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Saulx in the arrondissement of Lure .

geography

Saulx is located at an altitude of 301 m above sea level, about twelve kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in a promising position on a ledge east of the Saulx basin, between the valleys of Bognon in the south and Durgeon in the north-west.

The area of the 15.12 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area of the Saulx basin. The western part of the area is taken up by the alluvial lowlands of the Durgeon, which averages 230 m. It is approximately 1.5 kilometers wide. In the municipality, the Durgeon receives a tributary from the Ruisseau de Bognon , which flows through a wide basin south of Saulx. Agricultural use prevails here.

South of the Ruisseau de Bognon, the municipal area extends to the wooded peaks of Bois Charmont (336 m) and Bois de Saulx . At 375 m, Saulx's highest point is reached here. To the east of the valley plain of the Durgeon is the Saulx plateau, which reaches a height of around 300 m. It runs out at Saulx in a narrow lead. To the northeast, the municipality extends into the Bois de la Forêt and into the lowlands of the Ruisseau de Châteney (tributary of the Colombine ).

From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). Red sandstone and shell limestone from the Triassic period also come to light in some places . In the far south, in the Bois de Saulx area, there is a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period .

In addition to the actual village, Saulx also includes the following hamlets:

  • La Méchère (233 m) at the confluence of the Ruisseau de Bognon in the Durgeon
  • La Montoillotte (245 m) on a terrace south of the Durgeon

Neighboring municipalities of Saulx are Mailleroncourt-Charette and Servigney in the north, Genevrey , Châteney and Châtenois and Creveney in the east, Colombotte , Calmoutier and Montcey in the south and Colombier and La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize in the west.

history

Finds of graves from the Merovingian period indicate an early settlement of the area. Saulx is first mentioned in a document in 1143. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The rulership of Saulx was held by the lords of Faucogney, who provided it to a local noble family. Saulx developed into a medieval town. The Templars from La Villedieu also owned property in Saulx. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Saulx is the administrative seat of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Saulx comprising 17 villages .

Attractions
