Girefontaine is a commune in the Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Girefontaine is located at an altitude of 277 m above sea level, seven kilometers west of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse and about 30 kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme north of the department, on a terrace west of the valley basin of the Ruisseau le Chanois, on the edge of the plateau of the Vôge .

The area of ​​the 3.56 km² municipal area covers a section in the gently undulating landscape on the edge of the Vôge. The eastern border forms the Ruisseau le Chanois , which provides drainage to the southeast to the Planey . From this basin the community area extends westward over the terrace of Girefontaine to the adjacent hill of La Vangille . At 331 m, Girefontaine's highest point is reached here. To the north-west, the municipality extends into the valley of the Superbe . The area shows a loose structure of arable and meadow land and forest. In geological and tectonic terms, the main part of the municipal area consists of shell limestone from the Middle Triassic .

Girefontaine neighbors are Mailleroncourt-Saint-Pancras , Betoncourt-Saint-Pancras and Dampvalley-Saint-Pancras in the north, Anjeux in the east, Jasney in the south and Melincourt in the west.

history

Girefontaine has been an exclave of the Barrois in the Free County of Burgundy since the Middle Ages . Local rule was held by the lords of Saint-Loup, and later those of Fougerolles. The place name is derived from the Germanic personal name Gero and the French word fontaine (fountain). In 1569 the village was sacked and sacked by the soldiers of Duke Wolfgang von Pfalz-Zweibrücken .

With 37 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Girefontaine is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (111 people were still counted in 1881), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Girefontaine is still a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. Some workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D417, which leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Bourbonne-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Jasney and Anjeux.
