Saint-Ferréol and Saint-Ferjeux Church

Saint-Ferjeux is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saint-Ferjeux is located at an altitude of 298 m above sea level, six kilometers east of Villersexel and about 28 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends on the edge of the Villersexel plain north of the Ruisseau de la Prairie, on the northwestern edge of the hilly landscape that extends between the river valleys of Ognon and Doubs .

The area of ​​the 1.77 km² large municipality covers a section of the flat land near Villersexel. The entire area is occupied by a plateau, which is an average of 300 m and is slightly inclined to the west. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land. East of the village, the highest point of Saint-Ferjeux is reached at 318 m. The area is drained by the Ruisseau de la Prairie , which marks the southern and western municipal boundaries.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Ferjeux are Beveuge and Senargent-Mignafans in the north, Vellechevreux-et-Courbenans in the east, Georfans in the south and Villargent in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Ferjeux belonged to the lordship of Granges , which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. After that, in the 18th century, it was under the influence of the Lords of Grammont (in Villersexel). Since 2000, Saint-Ferjeux has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Villersexel, which comprises 33 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Ferréol and Saint-Ferjeux in Saint-Ferjeux was largely rebuilt in 1842 and has a square bell tower with a pyramid roof. The furnishings include several altars from the previous building as well as the statues of the church patrons Saint Ferréol and Saint-Ferjeux.

With 78 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Saint-Ferjeux is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 35 and 60 people, a significant increase in population was recorded until 1990. Since then, however, the trend has been down again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Ferjeux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The residents who work in the village still live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road from Villersexel to Héricourt . Further road connections exist with Beveuge and Senargent.
