geography

Pont-du-Bois is located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level, six kilometers north-northeast of Vauvillers and about 39 kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme north of the department, slightly elevated on the northern edge of the Côney valley , southeast of the ridge of Mont Paron.

The area of the 8.15 km² municipal area covers a section in the gently undulating landscape east of the upper Saône valley . The southern border always forms the Côney, which provides drainage to the west to the Saône. The waterway of the Canal de l'Est runs parallel to the north of the river . The alluvial lowland averages 235 m and has a maximum width of one kilometer, in the eastern part it is much narrower. In the south, the area extends to the edge of the Bois de la Craie .

The community area extends northward from the river to the adjacent plateau, which reaches a height of 290 m. Agricultural use prevails here. Extensive forests dominate further north. An approximately 100 m high step leads to the plateau of the Grand Bois , on which the highest elevation of Pont-du-Bois is reached at 482 m. The western boundary runs along the Ruisseau du Morillon , a right tributary of the Côney. In geological and tectonic terms, the terrain consists of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic .

The settlements of La Forge (240 m) in the Côney valley and Peu-d'Acquet (305 m) on the plateau on the southern edge of the Grand Bois belong to Pont-du- Bois. Neighboring municipalities of Pont-du-Bois are Passavant-la-Rochère in the north, Ambiévillers in the east, Mailleroncourt-Saint-Pancras , Vauvillers and Alaincourt in the south and Selles in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Pont-du-Bois was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Vauvillers held local rule. During the Thirty Years' War the place was visited in 1636 by troops of Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar , with numerous residents being killed. Together with Franche-Comté , Pont-du-Bois finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. From 1749 to 1907 there was a blast furnace and an ironworks here.

Attractions

The Nativité de Saint-Jean-Baptiste ( Birth of Saint John the Baptist ) church was built in 1775 on the site of a former chapel and destroyed during the French Revolution. The new building took place in 1858 with the inclusion of the bell tower from 1775. The main altar in Louis XV style is part of the furnishings .

Other sights include two wayside crosses, Belle Croix (18th century) in the village center and Grande Croix (1743) on the road to Peu-d'Acquet, as well as a lavoir .

With 108 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Pont-du-Bois is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased markedly during the 20th century (573 people were counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Pont-du-Bois was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Later, the blacksmith's work determined the economic life of the place. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Vauvillers to Bains-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Mailleroncourt-Saint-Pancras, Selles and Hennezel.
