Town hall ( Mairie ) of Chavanne

Chavanne is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chavanne is located at an altitude of 395 m above sea level, eight kilometers west of Héricourt and about twelve kilometers northwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends to the west of the Burgundian Gate , on a slightly elevated position on the south-eastern edge of a basin between the heights of the Massif de Saulnot in the north and the Bois d'Arcey in the south.

The area of the 2.32 km² large municipality covers a section to the west of the Burgundian Gate. The main part of the area is taken up by a basin, which is an average of 370 m and has no surface drainage. In the center of the basin is the Marais de Saulnot moorland . The Sapoie stream , which in parts forms the western border, provides drainage to the south, but seeps away after a short walk at the stalactite cave La Baume . The area is mainly used for agriculture (arable and meadow land). To the south-east, the municipality extends over a gently sloping slope to the wooded ridge of the Bois d'Arcey , on which the highest elevation of Chavanne is reached at 512 m. This ridge consists of a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period .

Neighboring communities of Chavanne are Le Vernoy in the east, Désandans and Villers-sur-Saulnot in the south and Saulnot in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Chavanne belonged to the Granges rule, which was under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. During the fierce fighting during the Second World War, the place was badly affected in 1944. Since 2001, Chavanne has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Héricourt, which comprises 20 localities . The village does not have its own church, it belongs to the Saulnot parish.

With 227 inhabitants (2005), Chavanne is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (295 people were still counted in 1886), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chavanne was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the vicinity and in the Belfort-Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares near the D9 department road that leads from Héricourt to Villersexel . There are other road connections with Villers-sur-Saulnot and Le Vernoy.
