Breuches is located at an altitude of 259 m above sea level, five kilometers west-southwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 24 kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, in the Luxeuil plain west of the Vosges , south of the course of the Breuchin .

The area of the 9.12 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Luxeuil plain. The Breuchin flows through the area from east to west, which forms several turns. The alluvial plain is on average at 255 m and is mainly used for agriculture. There are several ponds to the east of the village. The community area extends to the west as far as the Lanterne river at the foot of Mont Marot . The densely wooded ridge of the Forêt des Sept-Chevaux rises north of Breuches . It is subdivided by the valleys of various short side streams of the Breuchin. At 312 m, the highest elevation of Breuches is reached here. The ridge consists partly of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments of the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ), partly also red sandstone of the lower Triassic and the crystalline basement.

The Les Buissons settlement (262 m) north of Breuchin on the edge of the Forêt des Sept-Chevaux forest area belongs to Breuches . Neighboring municipalities of Breuches are Hautevelle in the north, Luxeuil-les-Bains and Saint-Sauveur in the east, Baudoncourt and Éhuns in the south and Villers-lès-Luxeuil , Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux and Ormoiche in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Breuches belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The Luxeuil monastery had been under local rule since 1265 . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Breuches is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Luxeuil, which comprises 13 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Breuches was rebuilt in the 19th century. It houses a marble statue of the Virgin Mary made by the Italian school in the 16th century. One cross is dated to 1726. To the east of the village, in a park, stands the castle, which was built in the mid-19th century and which today houses a medical and educational institute. Other sights include a round fountain (1876 to 1877) with a metal roof and statue.

With 688 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Breuches is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1881 there were still 1176 people counted), population growth was recorded again during the 1970s. Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, the trend has been down again.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Breuches was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, mainly in the food industry (meat processing), wood processing, precision mechanics and textile industry. In the last few decades the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. Part of the slopes of the Aérodrome de Luxeuil-Saint-Sauveur military airfield is located in the municipal area of Breuches.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Faverney . There are other road links with Saint-Sauveur and Conflans-sur-Lanterne .
