Mairie Ambiévillers

Ambiévillers is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Ambiévillers is located at an altitude of 275 m above sea level, eight kilometers northeast of Vauvillers and about 40 kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far north of the department, on the edge of a plateau north of the valley of the Côney , south of the forest heights of the Grand Bois . Ambiévillers is the northernmost municipality in the Haute-Saône department.

The area of the municipal area of 12.30 km² covers a section in the undulating landscape east of the upper Saône valley . The southern border always forms the Côney, which draws several river loops here and ensures the drainage to the west to the Saône. The waterway of the Canal de l'Est runs parallel to the north of the river . The alluvial valley averages 245 m and has a maximum width of 500 meters.

From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over a steep slope to the adjacent plateau, which reaches a height of 290 m. Agricultural use prevails here. Extensive forests dominate further north. An approximately 150 m high step leads to the plateau of the Grand Bois , on which the highest point of Ambiévillers is reached at 492 m. The eastern boundary runs partly along the Ruisseau de la Fresse and its tributary Ruisseau du Bon Vin . The valley system flows east of the town into the Côney valley. With a narrow tip, the communal soil extends northwest of the plateau of the Grand Bois into the valley of the Ruisseau du Morillon , another right tributary of the Côney. The Étang du Morillon is also located here . In geological and tectonic terms, the terrain consists of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic .

The hamlet of Le Morillon (320 m) in the Ruisseau du Morillon valley west of the Grand Bois belongs to Ambiévillers . Neighboring municipalities of Ambiévillers are Hennezel and Gruey-lès-Surance in the north, Fontenoy-le-Château and Montmotier in the east, Mailleroncourt-Saint-Pancras in the south and Pont-du-Bois and Passavant-la-Rochère in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Ambiévillers belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Vauvillers held local rule. During the Thirty Years' War the place was visited in 1636 by troops of Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar , with numerous residents being killed. Together with Franche-Comté, Ambiévillers finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Barthélemy by Ambiévillers was rebuilt in 1830 and houses altars from the 18th century and a statuette of St. Bartholomew (17th century). In the village square by the Mairie there is a calvaire (18th century) and a covered lavoir that once served as a fountain, wash house and cattle trough. Another lavoir is located on Grande rue at the junction of the road to Peu-d'Aquet. Other attractions include the Mausolée Régional de la Liberation on the road to Vauvillers and the Château de Freland on a narrow ledge over a bend in the Côney river. It was built in the 19th century as the residence of the owner of the forge, but it is privately owned and closed to visitors.

With 73 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Ambiévillers is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (453 people were still counted in 1881), only relatively small fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Ambiévillers was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Later, the forge and a glassworks determined the economic life of the place. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Vauvillers to Bains-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Pont-du-Bois and Hennezel.
