Mairie Corbenay |
Corbenay is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Corbenay is located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level, ten kilometers north-northwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 33 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends to the north of the department, on the plain of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse, north of the Combeauté lowlands , on the edge of the Vôge heights .
The area of the municipality of 15.73 km² covers a section of the plain of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse. The southern border mostly runs along the Combeauté, which flows here with several turns through a wide alluvial lowland to the west. The river forks in several places into parallel flowing watercourses. The islands are mostly composed of alluvial forest. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northward over the plain, in which two further streams flow parallel to the west with the Ruisseau des Caleuches and the Ruisseau du Clos , and over a forest area into the lowlands of Augronne and Sémouse . The latter marks the northern boundary. In the west, the municipal soil extends to the outskirts of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse. East of Corbenay the terrain rises slightly. Here you will find the vast forests of Bois du Chânet and Bois de Corbenay . At 331 m in the north-east, in the Bois des Blanches Carrières , the highest point of Corbenay is reached. The hills consist of red sandstone from the lower Triassic .
Neighboring municipalities of Corbenay are Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont and La Vaivre in the north, Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert with Fougerolles in the east, Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil in the south and Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse and Magnoncourt in the west.
history
Corbenay is mentioned in a document in 1293. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Local rule was held by the Lords of Faucogney. In addition, the priories of Fontaine and Hérival also had rights in the village. Together with Franche-Comté , Corbenay finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
At the beginning of the 19th century, thanks to the abundant hydropower, Corbenay developed into an industrial and commercial location with mills, brickworks, blast furnaces and an iron processing industry. With the opening of the railway line from Lure via Luxeuil to Épinal , Corbenay was connected to the French railway network in the second half of the 19th century.
Attractions
The Saint-Laurent church was rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of an earlier church and extensively restored in 1995. The remarkable furnishings include the richly carved pulpit in Louis XV style , a calvary (16th century) in the baptistery, a statue of the Madonna from the 14th century and various other statues from the 18th century.
On the road to Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse there is a neo-Gothic chapel built in the 19th century .

With 1282 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Corbenay is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 950 and 1150 people, a significant increase in population was recorded during the 1960s and 1970s. With more than 1400 inhabitants, the previous high was reached at the beginning of the 1980s. Since then, only relatively minor fluctuations have been observed.
Economy and Infrastructure
Corbenay developed early on into an industrial and commercial location. The most important employer today is a company in the metal industry (ESAC Eurocooler SA). There are also various small and medium-sized businesses, especially in the precision mechanics and kitchen appliance industries. Corbenay also has various retail businesses and services for daily needs. It is the location of an intermarché. In the last few decades the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the other larger towns in the Luxeuil region.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the D64 departmental road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Contrexéville via Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse . Further road connections exist with Fougerolles and Aillevillers. The nearest train station is in Aillevillers.
