Sainte-Marie-en-Chanois is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Sainte-Marie-en-Chanois is located at an altitude of 355 m above sea level, ten kilometers east of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 36 kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-eastern part of the department, in the western foothills of the Vosges , on the northern edge of the Breuchin valley .

The area of the 4.79 km² municipal area comprises a section of the plateau landscape on the western edge of the Vosges, which is criss-crossed by valleys. The southern border runs in the middle of the valley of the Breuchin, which flows here with several turns through an alluvial lowland to the west. The floodplain lies at an average of 345 m and has a maximum width of two kilometers. It is used for agriculture.

From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley, the terrace of Sainte-Marie and over a predominantly wooded steep slope to the adjacent heights of Mont Larrey and Maimont (up to 515 m). North of this forest height is the valley of the Ruisseau de Caignevoivre , a short side stream of the Breuchin. This is followed by a plateau with several ponds, mostly of glacial origin. At 572 m, the highest point in Sainte-Marie-en-Chanois is reached on a knoll at the Bellefleur farmstead. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the heights are built up partly from crystalline bedrock and partly from sandy-marly sediments of the Lias . On the plateaus there are glacial deposits from the Pleistocene . The entire municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

Neighboring municipalities of Sainte-Marie-en-Chanois are Saint-Bresson and Amont-et-Effreney in the north, Faucogney-et-la-Mer and La Voivre in the east, Les Fessey and La Proiselière-et-Langle in the south and Amage in the west .

history

Sainte-Marie is first mentioned in a document in 1195. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Faucogney. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Sainte-Marie-en-Chanois has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Luxeuil, comprising 16 localities, since 2017 .

Attractions

The Sainte-Madeleine church was rebuilt around 1756. The remarkable furnishings include furniture and the richly carved high altar from the 18th century as well as two statues (18th century) of Saints Magdalena and Columban in the sacristy. Also worth seeing are the “Lanterne des Morts” (16th century) and the octagonal fountain with a column on the village square. The Saint-Roch chapel was built in 1636 west of the village near the graves of victims of a plague epidemic and rebuilt in the 19th century. At the height north of the village is the Saint-Colomban chapel (19th century) near a grotto in which Saint Columban is said to have stayed temporarily in the 6th century.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Sainte-Marie-en-Chanois was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small-scale businesses, including companies in the plastics and wood processing industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains via Faucogney-et-la-Mer to Rupt-sur-Moselle . Further road connections exist with La Proiselière and Les Fessey.
