Rignovelle is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Rignovelle is located at an altitude of 319 m above sea level, nine kilometers north of Lure and about 29 kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-eastern part of the department, in a hollow on the western roof of the Plateau des Mille Étangs , on the edge of the Luxeuil plain.
The area of the 4.76 km² municipality covers a section of the southwestern Vosges foothills. The western part of the area is occupied by the alluvial plain of Luxeuil, which averages 310 m. It is drained by the Lambier and its source streams to the west to the Lanterne . Agricultural use prevails here. There are also numerous ponds, most of which were dammed (some by monks as early as the 11th century) and are used for fish farming. The largest are Étang des Brosses and La Noie Sebille .
To the east, the terrain gradually rises to the plateau des Mille Étangs and shows a more pronounced relief with hollows and knolls ( Les Hautois and Tête des Hêts , 359 m). Larger forest areas can be found in the area of the municipal boundaries, in the south of the Bois des Combes and in the east of the Bois de la Branle . At 362 m, the highest elevation of Rignovelle is reached in this forest. With a narrow tip, the community area extends eastwards to the Lanterne floodplain. In geological and tectonic terms, the terrain consists of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic . Deposits from the Pleistocene can be found in various places .
Neighboring communities of Rignovelle are Magnivray and Belmont in the north, Lantenot in the east, Linexert and Franchevelle in the south and Citers in the west.
history
The discovery of Roman coins indicates a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, Rignovelle belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Faucogney. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Rignovelle is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Franches-Communes, which comprises 14 villages .

With 112 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Rignovelle is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (253 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Rignovelle was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and fish farming. There is also a dairy farm today. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Mélisey . Other road connections exist with Franchevelle, Magnivray and Belmont.
