Velorcey is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Velorcey is located at an altitude of 258 m above sea level, eleven kilometers west-southwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 19 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, in a hollow at the northern foot of the heights of Mont Vaulot .
The area of the 6.18 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape south of the lantern . The central part of the area is taken up by the basin of the Ruisseau de la Prairie and its source streams. He ensures the drainage to the north to the lantern. The valley basin lies at an average of 250 m and has a maximum width of one kilometer. Agricultural use prevails here.
To the south, the terrain, which is mainly made up of shell limestone from the Middle Triassic , gradually rises to the heights of the Bois de Villers . The eastern boundary forms the summit of the Bois Dard , on which the highest elevation of Velorcey is reached at 310 m. North of the lowland of the Ruisseau de la Prairie , the municipal area extends into the extensive wooded area of the Bois de Bertimont (up to 288 m). Here red sandstone from the Lower Triassic comes to light.
Neighboring municipalities of Velorcey are Conflans-sur-Lanterne and Briaucourt in the north, Abelcourt in the east, Villers-lès-Luxeuil in the south and Meurcourt in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages Velorcey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . It was dependent on the Knights Templar of La Villedieu-en-Fontenette . In 1364 the village was destroyed by the Grandes Compagnies . Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. At the beginning of the 20th century, Velorcey was connected to the public transport network by a tram. Operation on the line was discontinued in 1934 and replaced by a bus connection.

With 209 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Velorcey is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (279 people were still counted in 1881), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Velorcey was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to La Villedieu-en-Fontenette. Another road connection is with Conflans-sur-Lanterne.
