Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux is located at an altitude of 256 m above sea level, six kilometers west-southwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 22 kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village is located in the northern part of the department, on the Luxeuil plain west of the Vosges , east of the Lanterne .

The area of ​​the 2.43 km² municipal area includes a section of the Luxeuil plain. From the southeast to the northwest, the area is traversed by the lantern, which draws several turns. The alluvial plain is on average at 255 m and is mainly used for agriculture. To the northwest, the municipal area extends with a narrow corner to the wooded hill of Mont Marot . At 287 m, the highest point in Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux is reached here. It is built partly from red sandstone from the lower Triassic , partly from calcareous and sandy-marl sediments of the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

The neighboring communities of Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux are Ormoiche in the north, Breuches in the east, Villers-lès-Luxeuil in the south and Abelcourt in the west.

history

Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux was first mentioned in a document in 1156. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and within it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Auxelles held local rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2016, Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux has been a member of the 42 localities community association Communauté de communes du Triangle Vert .

Attractions

The village church of Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux was largely rebuilt in the 19th century. It has a portal in the flamboyant style, a baptismal font from the 16th century, furniture and bas-reliefs from the 18th century and wall paintings from 1910. A Gothic wayside cross (15th century) stands on the road to Breuches . The oldest surviving house in the village was built at the beginning of the 17th century and recently restored.

With 161 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (223 people were counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The hydropower of the lantern was previously used to operate a mill (Moulin de la Faille). Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Faverney . Other road connections exist with Éhuns and Baudoncourt.
