Town hall ( Mairie ) of Chenebier

Chenebier is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chenebier is located at an altitude of 350 m above sea level, eight kilometers north-northwest of Héricourt and about eleven kilometers west of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southern foothills of the Vosges , in a valley basin of the Lizaine , on the Ruisseau de Chenebier and at the eastern foot of the Chérimont .

The area of the 9.05 km² municipal area includes a section in the southern Vosges foothills. The central part of the area is occupied by a wide valley basin, which averages 360 m. Several streams, including the Ruisseau de Chenebier , feed their water to the Lizaine, which in parts forms the eastern municipal boundary and provides drainage to the Allan . In hollows and valleys there are numerous ponds that were once created for fish farming. The area consists mainly of arable and meadow land. The Chenebier basin is flanked in the south by the Bois de la Thure , where the highest point in the municipality is reached at 472 m, and in the north by the foothills of the Chérimont (up to 445 m). These elevations belong to the hill country, which forms the southwestern continuation of the Vosges and is made up partly of red sandstone , partly of Permian layers, and partly the crystalline basement comes to light. The northern boundary runs in the valley of the Ruisseau des Noriandes (tributary of the Lizaine).

The hamlets of La Louvière (380 m), La Neuvelle (375 m) and La Revenue (370 m) belong to Chenebier . Neighboring municipalities of Chenebier are Champagney in the north, Échavanne and Frahier-et-Chatebier in the east, Chagey and Luze in the south and Étobon in the west.

history

Chenebier is first mentioned in a document in 1150. The place probably developed around a former Cistercian monastery. In the Middle Ages, Chenebier belonged to the Héricourt domain. During the Thirty Years' War the place was ravaged and sacked by Swedish troops in 1636. In 1748, Chenebier finally came under contract to the French crown. Since 2001, Chenebier has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Héricourt, comprising 20 localities .

Lutheran Church
Catholic Church of the Assumption

The Lutheran church was rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of the former church; the equipment includes a gilded silver chalice (17th century). The parish, until then a branch of the parish in Étobon, was raised by the king in 1837 to an independent parish. Today it belongs to the Lutheran parish association Le Mont Vaudois with eleven others . The Catholic church, also from the 19th century, has an altar from the 18th century.

With 685 inhabitants (2006), Chenebier is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (596 people were counted in 1886), strong population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the population has almost doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chenebier was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. Today there are also various local small-scale businesses (food processing, mechanical workshops). In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the vicinity and in the Belfort-Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Héricourt to Échavanne. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 16 km away. There are further road connections with Étobon, Frahier-et-Chatebier and Châlonvillars.
