Dampierre-lès-Conflans is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Dampierre-lès-Conflans is located at an altitude of 302 m above sea level, eight kilometers southwest of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse and about 25 kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, on a hill west of the valley of the Planey , on the eastern slope of the Mont d'Olivette.

The area of the 10.37 km² municipal area covers a section in the gently undulating landscape north of the Lanterne valley . The central part of the area is occupied by a ridge running in a west-east direction, which averages 300 m. At 328 m, the highest point of Dampierre-lès-Conflans is reached on the Mont d'Olivette west of the town. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the ridge consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). Shell limestone from the Middle Triassic also appears in some places .

Towards the north and east, the height drops relatively steeply towards the adjoining valleys of Ruisseau de Cou and Planey . The latter flows through a wide alluvial lowland , which averages 230 m and a maximum width of one kilometer. At Varigney it flows into the Semouse, which marks the south-eastern border for a short section. The southern boundary runs along its right tributary Ruisseau du Vass . On the heights of Dampierre and in the valleys, agriculture predominates. To the west, the municipal area extends into the extensive forests of Grand Bois , Clair Bois and Bois de l'Étang .

The Varigney settlement (231 m) in the floodplain at the confluence of the Planey and Semouse rivers belongs to Dampierre-lès-Conflans . Neighboring municipalities of Dampierre-lès-Conflans are Jasney in the north, Plainemont and Briaucourt in the east, Conflans-sur-Lanterne , Bassigney and Bourguignon-lès-Conflans in the south and Saint-Rémy-en-Comté and Melincourt in the west.

history

Dampierre was first mentioned in 1176 when it was donated to Clairefontaine monastery. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Castellanei Conflans, which was subordinate to the Barrois and thus formed an enclave in the Free County of Burgundy. During the Thirty Years' War, Dampierre was completely destroyed by Swedish troops in 1636 and probably only rebuilt at its current location at the beginning of the 18th century. A blast furnace existed in the hamlet of Varigney until the 18th century , followed by a foundry.

Attractions

The church of Saint-Pierre-et-Paul was rebuilt around 1780 and has furniture from the 18th century and a pulpit in the Louis XV style .

The town center is characterized by numerous houses from the 18th century, which show the traditional Lorraine style. The Saint-Éloi chapel is located in Varigney.

With 260 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Dampierre-lès-Conflans is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (787 people were counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Dampierre-lès-Conflans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The hydropower of the Ruisseau de Cou was previously used to operate a mill. In Varigney there was a foundry, which shaped the economic life of the place. Today there are a number of local small-scale businesses, including one that specializes in the manufacture of trimmings and one that specializes in construction. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Conflans-sur-Lanterne to Anchenoncourt. Further road connections exist with Jasney and Bassigney.

partnership

Since 1993 Dampierre-lès-Conflans has had a partnership with the municipality of Roccagiovine in the Italian region of Lazio.
