Mairie Saulnot

Saulnot is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saulnot is located at an altitude of 360 m above sea level, ten kilometers west of Héricourt and about 14 kilometers northwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends to the west of the Burgundian Gate , in a longitudinal hollow between the heights of the Massif de Saulnot ( Bois de Granges ) in the north and the Bois des Hautes Roches in the south.

The area of the 26.73 km² municipal area includes a section to the west of the Burgundian Gate. The central part of the area is traversed in a west-east direction by a wide longitudinal basin that has a width of about three kilometers. In the area of the village runs a watershed: To the west drains the Ruisseau du Pont du Rond and the Ruisseau de Mouillère , which belong to the catchment area of the Ognon ; to the east there is an above-ground drainless basin in which the Marais de Saulnot moorland extends. However, the Sapoie stream seeps away at the southern edge of the basin. The area is mainly used for agriculture (arable and meadow land).

The longitudinal basin is flanked in the south by the wooded high plateau des Bois des Hautes Roches (510 m), which leads to the adjacent, arid limestone plateau. The high plateau consists of a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period . To the north, the municipality extends into the hilly area of the Massif de Saulnot , which is covered by the extensive forest of the Bois de Granges . It forms the southwestern continuation of the Vosges and is partly made of red sandstone , partly the crystalline basement comes to light. On the ridge of the Grand Bois de Champey , the highest point of Saulnot is reached at 522 m. In the far north, the municipal ban extends to the headwaters of Ruisseau de Courmont and Ruisseau des Prés Meuniers .

In addition to the actual place, several villages and hamlets belong to Saulnot, namely:

  • Malval (375 m) in the valley of the Ruisseau de Mouillère on the southern edge of the Bois de Granges
  • Corcelles (365 m) at the north foot of the Bois des Hautes Roches
  • Gonvillars (395 m) in a valley basin at the eastern foot of the Bois des Hautes Roches

Neighboring municipalities of Saulnot are Faymont and Courmont in the north, Champey , Le Vernoy , Chavanne and Villers-sur-Saulnot in the east, Arcey and Gémonval in the south and Crevans-et-la-Chapelle-lès-Granges and Granges-le-Bourg in the west .

history

The municipality of Saulnot was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Evidence of the presence of humans was found in the Grotte de la Baume (near Gonvillars) and on a Bronze Age settlement in the Bois de Corcelles. Saulnot is mentioned in the year 1147 in connection with salt and mineral springs. In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the rule of Granges. From the 14th century, the Counts of Montbéliard increased their influence on Saulnot. The village was known for its salt mining until the 17th century. In neighboring Corcelles, which was first mentioned in 1140, the mining of hard coal was important in the 16th century .

Together with Franche-Comté , Saulnot finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1821 when Malval (which only became a separate municipality in 1790) was incorporated into Saulnot. In 1972 the previously independent municipalities of Corcelles and Gonvillars were merged with Saulnot. Since 2001, Saulnot has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Héricourt, comprising 20 localities .

Attractions

The village church Église de la Décollation-de-Saint-Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Beheading) in Saulnot was rebuilt in 1946. The rich interior includes a baptismal font from the 12th or 13th century, two silver chalices and a copper cross from the 18th century. A wayside cross dates from the 18th century. Various houses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the traditional Franche-Comté style have been preserved in the town center. The Fontaine-Lavoir, which once served as a fountain, wash house and cattle trough, was built from red sandstone in the 19th century. Remains in the Châtelot corridor testify to a former manor house.

With 694 inhabitants (2004) Saulnot is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (674 people were still counted in 1886), strong population growth was recorded again, especially during the 1970s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has remained almost constant.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Saulnot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now various businesses in the local small trade as well as businesses in the building trade and precision engineering. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in Héricourt and the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road D9, which leads from Héricourt to Villersexel . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 20 km away. Other road connections exist with Arcey, Aibre, Lomont and Granges-le-Bourg.
