Saint-Germain is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Saint-Germain is located at an altitude of 321 m above sea level, five kilometers northeast of Lure and about 30 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the eastern part of the department, in the Lure plain, on a terrace west of the Ognon floodplain .
The area of the 14.12 km² municipal area includes a section of the plain of Lure. The alluvial plain on the edge of the Vosges is an average of 310 m. It is traversed by the course of the Ognon, which flows with several windings through a formerly marshy lowland to the southwest. The plain is mainly used for agriculture. East of the Ognon is only a small part of the community; the area extends to the runways of the former Lure-Malbouhans airfield.
To the west of the Ognon is the terrace of Saint-Germain, which consists of sand and gravel sediments that were deposited during the Pleistocene in the run-up to the Vosges glaciers. The heights of Le Mont (330 m) and Bois de Montaigu (347 m) rise from the plain . The terrace is limited to the west by the formerly moorland lowland of the Ruisseau des Prés Richard with several fish ponds. The community area extends further west into the extensive forest of the Grand Bois . This is where the moorland La Grande Pile and the 18 hectare Étang des Monts Reveaux are located . The western boundary runs on the Monts Reveaux , on which the highest point of Saint-Germain is reached at 357 m.
The settlements of Le Mont (320 m) south and Les Baraques (322 m) north of the village belong to Saint-Germain . Neighboring municipalities to Saint-Germain are Linexert , Lantenot and Mélisey in the north, La Neuvelle-lès-Lure in the east, Froideterre and Lure in the south and Franchevelle in the west.
history
Remains of the Roman traffic route that led from Luxeuil to Mandeure point to a very early inspection and settlement of the area. At the time of Columban in the 6th century a monastery was founded here. Saint-Germain is mentioned in a document in 1187 under the Latinized name Sanctus Germanus , later as Sant Germains . In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was held by the Lords of Faucogney, later the village belonged to the Barony Mélisey, whereby it formed its own rule from the 14th to the 16th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Saint-Germain finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. It was not until 1787 that the residents were granted freedom rights by the then owner from the noble Bauffremont family. With the opening of the tram from Lure to Le Thillot (1895), Saint-Germain was connected to the public transport network. However, the line was stopped again at the beginning of World War II. Today, Saint-Germain is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Lure, which comprises 22 localities .
Attractions
The church of St. Germanus ( Église Saint-Germain ) of Saint-Germain was rebuilt in the 19th century according to plans by the architect Félix Grandmougin . The furnishings include a painting of St. Germanus (18th century), a statue of Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire (18th century) and the granite main altar (19th century).
Other attractions include the Château du Saulcy (built in 1740), a pigeon house (18th century) and the covered lavoir from 1823, which once served as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 1,344 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Saint-Germain is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 950 and 1060 people, a slight population growth has been recorded since 1970, which has increased in recent years.
Economy and Infrastructure
From early on, Saint-Germain was a village characterized by agriculture and fish farming as well as small businesses (mills, weaving mills). Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, especially in the textile, wood processing and precision engineering sectors. In the last few decades the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the Lure region.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Lure via Mélisey to Le Thillot . Further road connections exist with Lantenot, Froideterre and Malbouhans. The nearest train station is in Lure.
