Mairie Esboz-Brest

Esboz-Brest is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Esboz-Brest is located at an altitude of 313 m above sea level, five kilometers east of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 30 kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northeastern part of the department, on the eastern edge of the Luxeuil plain, on the Ruisseau du Vay de Brest , west of the Mille Étangs plateau .

The area of the 9.69 km² municipal area includes a section of the Luxeuil plain. The main part of the area is taken up by this alluvial plain , which is an average of 300 m. It is drained by the Ruisseau du Vay de Brest and its source streams to the west to the Lanterne . Agricultural use predominates in this plain, but there are also large areas of forest, including the Bois de Laleau in the west and the Vay de Brest and the Corne Buisson in the south. There are numerous ponds here, most of which were dammed (some by monks as early as the 11th century) and are used for fish farming. Towards the east, the terrain rises slightly to the Mille Étangs plateau . The northern boundary runs partly at the foot, partly on the slope at the height of the Grand Bois . At 375 m, the highest point in Esboz-Brest is reached here.

The municipality consists of the following settlements:

  • Esboz (313 m) on the western edge of the Plateau des Mille Étangs
  • Brest (285 m) in the lowlands of the Ruisseau du Vay de Brest
  • Les Fouillies de Brest (300 m) in a clearing on the northern edge of the Vay de Brest forest
  • Les Rois (315 m) on the western edge of the Plateau des Mille Étangs
  • Le Haut-d'Esboz (345 m) at the southern foot of the Grand Bois

Neighboring municipalities of Esboz-Brest are Breuchotte in the north, La Bruyère in the east, Magnivray , Citers , Ailloncourt and La Chapelle-lès-Luxeuil in the south and Saint-Sauveur and Froideconche in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Esboz and Brest belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local authority was held by the abbots of the Luxeuil monastery ; secular rule was incumbent on the Courbessaint family and later the Macon d'Esboz. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Esboz and Brest formed a double municipality since the time of the French Revolution. Today Esboz-Brest is a member of the community of 13 localities, Communauté de communes du Pays de Luxeuil .

Attractions

With 428 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Esboz-Brest is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (617 people were still counted in 1886), the population has continued to grow steadily since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Esboz-Brest was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), forestry and fish farming. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Sauveur to Lantenot . Further road connections exist with Froideconche, Breuchotte and La Corbière.
