The village extends in the central part of the department, on the western edge of the plain of Lure, at the eastern foot of the height of the Châtillon.

The area of the 17.30 km² large municipal area includes a section of the plain of Lure. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by this alluvial plain , which is on average 310 m. In the east, the area extends into the extensive forest of the Bois des Franches Communes , with the main road from Lure to Luxeuil-les-Bains marking the eastern border.

To the west of Adelans the terrain rises to the wooded heights of Châtillon (391 m) in the north and Mont Jarrot (411 m) in the south. They form the watershed between the Ognon and Saône catchment areas . Further to the west, the Colombine valley joins, which is a maximum of one kilometer wide and an average of 300 m. The western boundary is formed by the elongated ridge of the Grand Bois de Genevrey, running in a north-south direction . At 445 m, the highest point in Adelans-et-le-Val-de-Bithaine is reached here. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the western section of the municipality, which is more in relief, is made up of alternating layers of sandy, marly and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). Shell limestone from the Middle Triassic also appears in various places .

The double community consists of the following districts:

  • Adelans (317 m) on the western edge of the Lure plain
  • Bithaine-et-le-Val (298 m) in the basin of the Colombine
  • Le Mouliney (305 m) in the basin of the Colombine

history

Remains of Gallo-Roman wall foundations at Bithaine-et-le-Val bear witness to the very early settlement of the area. Adelans is mentioned in writing as early as the time of Charlemagne in 815. In the 12th century it is documented as the site of a church. In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Faucogney. In Bithaine, monks of the Cistercian order founded the Bithaine monastery , whose property was greatly enlarged in the 13th century through donations from the Lords of Faucogney.

Together with Franche-Comté , Adelans and Bithaine finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the first half of the 19th century there was a spinning mill in Bithaine. In 1993 the two previously independent municipalities of Adelans and Bithaine-et-le-Val (1990: 15 inhabitants) merged to form a double municipality. Adelans belongs to the canton of Lure-Nord , while Bithaine-et-le-Val was assigned to the canton of Saulx . Even after the municipal merger, the canton border remained in place, so that Adelans-et-le-Val-de-Bithaine is one of the few French small communities that belongs to two different cantons. Today Adelans-et-le-Val-de-Bithaine is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Franches-Communes, which comprises 14 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Adelans was built in the 19th century in neo -Gothic style and has statues and furniture from the 18th century. In Bithaine are the remains of the former Notre-Dame-de-Bithaine monastery (18th century) with the east wing, a pigeon house and a fountain. The complex is classified as a monument historique .
