Montessaux is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level, eight kilometers northeast of Lure and about 33 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). history
In the time of Columban around 600 a monastery called Monasterium Salicis was founded here. In the Middle Ages, Montessaux belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was initially held by the Lords of Faucogney, since 1339 the village belonged to the Barony of Mélisey. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Montessaux is a member of the community association Communauté de communes de la Haute Vallée de l'Ognon, which comprises 12 villages . Montessaux does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Saint-Barthélemy.

Economy and Infrastructure
Montessaux is still today a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from the departmental road from Lure to Mélisey. Other road connections exist with Saint-Barthélemy and La Neuvelle-lès-Lure.
