Palante is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Palante is located at an altitude of 308 m above sea level, seven kilometers east-southeast of Lure and about 21 kilometers west of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the eastern part of the department, slightly elevated west of the Rognon lowlands , on the western edge of the heights of the Chérimont .

The area of ​​the 3.46 km² municipal area covers a section in the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Lure plain. The eastern border always runs along the Rognon, which provides drainage over the Scey to the Ognon . The alluvial low lies on average at 300 m and has a width of around 500 meters. From the course of the river, the community area extends westward to the Palante hill and into the basin of a right side stream of the Rognon. There are several fish ponds in the area that is mainly used for agriculture. To the north, the community soil extends into the La Noye Jeannin forest . At 337 m, the highest elevation of Palante is reached here. In geological and tectonic terms, the area consists of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments which were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ) and the Triassic (especially Muschelkalk).

Neighboring municipalities of Palante are La Côte and Magny-Danigon in the north, Andornay in the east, Lyoffans in the south and Frotey-lès-Lure and Roye in the west.

In the Middle Ages, Palante belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lure monastery, which Palante left to Hugues de Bourgogne for life in 1290. As early as 1449, the residents were granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Palante is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Lure, which comprises 22 villages . Palante does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Lyoffans.

With 239 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Palante is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (160 people were counted in 1881), the population continued to grow continuously from 1975 to 1990. Since then, the population has remained at a constant level.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Palante was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), forestry and fish farming. Gypsum and lime mining were also important. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort-Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the D438 departmental road, which leads from Lure to Montbéliard and which has been developed into a four-lane expressway in this area. Further road connections exist with Frotey-lès-Lure, Lyoffans, Andornay and La Côte.
