history

Verlans is mentioned for the first time in 1173 under the name Vaylant . This was followed by the spellings Vellans (1300), Voillans (1374) and Veans , before Verlans prevailed from 1613 . In the Middle Ages, Verlans initially belonged directly to the county of Montbéliard. In 1327 it was placed under the rule of Héricourt. The Reformation was introduced around 1565. When the Guisen invaded Verlans in 1587/88, it was looted and destroyed, as well as in the years 1635 to 1638 during the Thirty Years War . With the annexation of the county of Montbéliard, Verlans finally came into French hands in 1793. Since 2001 Verlans has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Héricourt, which comprises 20 localities .

With 140 inhabitants (2007) Verlans is one of the smallest communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 40 and 80 people, a significant increase in population was recorded during the 1970s. After a temporary stagnation, the number of inhabitants has increased again since 2000.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Verlans was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The residents who work in the village still live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. However, many workers are commuters who work in Héricourt and in the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Héricourt to Trémoins. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 13 kilometers away.
