geography

Tavey is located at an altitude of 343 m above sea level, two kilometers southwest of Héricourt and about eight kilometers northwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends to the west of the Burgundian Gate , in a niche on the southwestern edge of the Héricourt basin, through which the Lizaine flows.

The area of the 2.96 km² large Commune déléguée includes a section in the area of the Burgundian Gate. The populated part of the area is occupied by the Héricourt basin, which is at an average of 340 m. The area is drained by the village stream to the Ruisseau de l'Étang and by the Ruisseau des Épenottes directly to the Lizaine. To the south-west, a 50 to 80 m high step leads over to the adjacent high plateaus, which are made up of limestone from the Upper Jurassic period . They are partly used for agriculture, but also show larger forest areas. At 448 m, Tavey's highest point is reached on the edge of the Grand Bois .

Neighboring communities of Tavey were Héricourt in the north, Vyans-le-Val in the east, Laire in the south and Verlans in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, the village of Tavey formed a dominion that was subordinate to Lure Abbey . In the course of time, the possession of Tavey led several times to disputes between the Counts of Montbéliard, Thiébaud de Neuchâtel and the Vogt of Héricourt. After the Reformation was introduced around 1565, the church served as a place of worship for both faiths for a long time. With the annexation of the county of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , Tavey finally came into French hands in 1793. From 2001 until it was dissolved in 2019, Tavey was a member of the Pays d'Héricourt, a community of 20 municipalities .

The municipality of Tavey merged with Héricourt on January 1, 2019 to form the Commune nouvelle Héricourt. Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée.

Attractions

Today's Lutheran church originally goes back to a Romanesque building, parts of which have been preserved in the choir; the rest was rebuilt in 1760. The parish belongs to the Lutheran parish association Le Mont Vaudois with eleven others . The Catholic Church dates from the 20th century. A stone cross dates from 1792. Various houses from the 17th and 18th centuries in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté have been preserved in the town center.

The Roman Catholic Church of St-Germain was built in 1910, profaned in 2015 and then rebuilt.

With the last 504 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016), Tavey was one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (275 people were counted in 1911), strong population growth was recorded again during the 1960s and 1970s. After a temporary stagnation, there has been another increase since 2000.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Tavey was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in Héricourt and the agglomerations of Montbéliard and Belfort .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N83, which leads from Belfort to L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 13 kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Laire and Byans.
