Culture and sights

Churches

Ronchamp became internationally known for the Notre Dame du Haut chapel, built by Le Corbusier from 1953 to 1955 , which is regarded as an architectural icon. Its location at the former oppidum of Bourlémont above the town is a very old pilgrimage site of the cult of Mary and offers a wide panorama over the surroundings.

The neo-Gothic parish church in the town center dates from the 19th century.

Mining museum

The mining industry in Ronchamp began in the mid-17th century and developed until the end of the 19th century into an industry with 1,500 employees. The coal basin consists of three superimposed carbon veins 40 cm to 3 meters thick. Mining took place from 1904 to 1958 to a depth of 994.64 meters; since 1946 the mine was nationalized. In the heyday of this colliery, in 1860, 1503 miners were employed here. 1000 tons of coal were mined every ten hour day.

The Puits Sainte-Marie were the shaft of a former coal mine , the history of which is told in the Marcel Maulini mining museum. The museum offers a retrospective of the miners' work, the tools and techniques they used, and their social life. There is also a remarkable collection of mountain lamps on display.
