Mairie and Fallen Memorial in Fallon

Fallon is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Fallon is located at an altitude of 340 m above sea level, six kilometers southeast of Villersexel and about 27 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in a hollow in the headwaters of the Grand Ru on the northwestern edge of the hilly landscape that extends between the river valleys of Ognon and Doubs , at the western foot of the Grammont promontory.

The area of the 5.64 km² municipal area covers a section of the hilly landscape southeast of the Ognon valley. The main part of the area is taken up by the semicircular hollow of Fallon, which opens to the north. It is drained from the Grand Ru, which is dammed into a pond below the village, to the north to the Scey . This hollow with its relatively gently sloping slopes is mainly used for agriculture. To the south, an approximately 100 m high step leads to the adjacent plateau. These include the northward spur of Grammont (Motte de Grammont) and the heights of Bournois, on which Fallon's highest point is reached at 434 m. To the west, the community area extends over a saddle into the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Peute Vue and up to the heights of the Bois du Chanoi (390 m). While the northern part of the municipality is mainly composed of sandy-marly layers of the Lias , the plateau in the south consists of a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period .

The neighboring municipalities of Fallon are Les Magny and Mélecey in the north, Grammont in the east, Bournois in the south and Abbenans in the west.

history

The municipality of Fallon was inhabited very early, as indicated by several tumuli in the Bois de la Côte. Fallon formed a fiefdom of the Granges rule in the Middle Ages. The local noble family, which has been documented since the 12th century, died out in 1431. Thereafter, the area was divided between the lords of Raincourt and Grammont. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the 19th century, Fallon was known far beyond the region for its foundry (manufacture of ovens). The foundry is no longer in operation today. Fallon has been a member of the Pays de Villersexel community association, which comprises 33 localities, since 2000 .

Attractions

The Saint-Léger church in Fallon was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. Also worth seeing is the 18th century Fontaine Lavoir , which used to be a fountain, wash house and cattle trough. There is a manor house from the 18th century ( Château de Fallon ) and various houses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the traditional Haute-Saône style.

With 313 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Fallon is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (514 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Fallon was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing, viticulture and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now various local small businesses, including those in the precision engineering and metal processing industries. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Abbenans to Georfans. Further road connections exist with Bournois and Magny-le-Grand.
