Abbenans is a French municipality with 342 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Abbenans is located at an altitude of 320  m above sea level, six kilometers south of Villersexel and about 27 km west of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the hilly landscape between the lowlands of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, in a wide hollow of the Bief d'Auta at the north foot of the Grands Bois .

The area of the 11.17 km² large municipal area comprises a section of the hilly landscape south of the Ognontal. The central part of the area is occupied by the Abbenans basin. This is drained by the Bief d'Auta and its side streams to the northwest to the Ognon. It is mainly used for agriculture. This basin is limited in the north by the Bois du Chanoi ( 393  m ), in the east by the heights of Bournois and in the south by the high plateau of the Grands Bois , on which the highest elevation of Abbenans is reached at 447 m. The plateau is predominantly forested and runs out in several projections to the Abbenans basin. To the east, the community area extends into the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Peute Vue , another tributary of the Ognon.

Neighboring communities of Abbenans are Les Magny in the north, Fallon and Bournois in the east, Uzelle in the south and Cubry in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Abbenans belonged to the d'Oiselay family and then to the lords of Grammont. Together with Franche-Comté, the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Abbenans is a member of the Deux Vallées Vertes municipal association .

With 342 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Abbenans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1881 there were still 675 people), the population grew during the 1970s, but has fallen again in recent years.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Abbenans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the vicinity.

The place is away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main road D50, which leads from Baume-les-Dames to Villersexel . Further road connections exist with Fallon and Uzelle.
