Château de Roulans

Roulans is a French commune with 1,127 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the canton of Baume-les-Dames in the arrondissement of Besançon .

geography

Roulans is located at 344  m , eleven kilometers west-southwest of Baume-les-Dames and about 18 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon , in a longitudinal hollow north of the Doube valley at the north foot of the Pic d'Aigremont.

The area of the 8.31 km² large municipal area includes a section in the extreme northwestern mountain ranges of the Jura . The central part of the area is taken up by a longitudinal hollow, which at Roulans is around one kilometer wide and averages 340 m. It forms the main settlement area and consists mainly of arable and meadow land. In the north, this hollow is flanked by a wooded ridge ( Bois des Perrières and Bois du Poirier , up to 437 m). The southern boundary of the longitudinal furrow is marked by the sharp crest of the Montagne Notre-Dame-d'Aigremont , which has steep limestone rocks in various places. From a geological-tectonic point of view, this represents the northern leg of an anticline , the vault of which was broken up and eroded away by the course of the Doubs. At 554 m, the highest point of Roulans is reached on the summit of Pic d'Aigremont. In the east and south-east, the community area extends over the ridge, which is no longer so sharp in the terrain, down into the incised Doubstal valley.

The municipality of Roulans consists of several districts and hamlets, namely:

  • Grand Roulans ( 344  m ) in the longitudinal hollow of Roulans
  • Roulans l'Église ( 345  m ) in the longitudinal basin of Roulans at the northern foot of the Pic d'Aigremont
  • Petit Roulans ( 320  m ) in the longitudinal hollow of Roulans at the beginning of an erosion channel leading down to the Doubs
  • Les Trouillots ( 385  m ) on the south-facing slope of the ridge of the Bois du Poirier

Neighboring municipalities of Roulans are Vennans , Saint-Hilaire and Breconchaux in the north, Ougney-Douvot in the east, Laissey in the south and Deluz and Pouligney-Lusans in the west.

history

Roulans was first mentioned in a document in the 10th century under the name of Rollens . At that time there was already a castle on the strategically located Pic d'Aigremont. At the beginning of the 13th century, the lords of Roulans had their ancestral seat rebuilt a little further east on the ridge above Petit Roulans. By marriage in the 13th century the rule came to the powerful house of Vienne. An important offspring of this family was Jean de Vienne , who spent his youth at the castle of Roulans and served as an influential French admiral during the Hundred Years War. Together with Franche-Comté , Roulans finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The castle was destroyed during the French Revolution .

The Saint-Michel church was consecrated in 1744 and extensively restored in 1846. On the site of the former Château d'Aigremont, the Notre-Dame-d'Aigremont chapel was built in the 13th century. The ruins of the Château de Roulans, which originally date back to the 13th century, have been preserved.

With 1,127 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Roulans is one of the smaller communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 360 and 420 people, a continuous population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Roulans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. There are also various local small business and retail businesses today, but no industrial operations. Roulans is home to the Center d'Insémination et d'Élevage du Doubs et du Territoire de Belfort (CEIA), a center for artificial insemination and breeding of Montbéliard cattle. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around nine kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Pouligney-Lusans, Laissey and Vennans. The nearest train station on the Besançon-Montbéliard railway line is in neighboring Laissey.
