Breconchaux is a French commune with a population of 93 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Breconchaux is located at 346 m , seven kilometers west of Baume-les-Dames and about 22 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon , in a hollow at the northern foot of the Pinfou forest.
The area of the 3.26 km² municipal area includes a section in the extreme northwestern mountain ranges of the Jura . The central part of the area is occupied by a basin, which is an average of 340 m and opens to the west to a wide basin. It is predominantly made up of arable and meadow land. This basin is flanked in the north by the heights of the Bois du Chanoi and the Bois du Grand Val , where the highest point in Breconchaux is reached at 400 m. The community area extends to the south as far as the ridge of the Bois du Pinfou ( 370 m ). There are no above-ground rivers in the entire area because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.
Neighboring municipalities of Breconchaux are Val-de-Roulans in the north, Baume-les-Dames and Séchin in the east, Ougney-Douvot and Roulans in the south and Saint-Hilaire and L'Écouvotte in the west.
history
Finds in the Mazirolle-sous-la-Chaille corridor indicate that the municipality of Breconchaux was already inhabited during Roman times. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 93 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Breconchaux is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (98 people were still counted in 1886), population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Breconchaux was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around twelve kilometers away. There are other road connections with L'Écouvotte and Val-de-Roulans.
