Braillans is a French municipality with 205 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Braillans is located at 350  m , about ten kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon , in a depression in the forest area of the Forêt de Chailluz, between the mountain ranges of Bois de Sassy in the south and Grande Côte (with the Fort de la Dame Blanche ) in the north.

The area of the 1.95 km² municipal area covers a section in the extreme northwestern mountain ranges of the Jura . The main part of the area is occupied by a depression in the Forêt de Chailluz, in which the cleared island of Braillans is located. To the north, the community area extends up the wooded slope of the Grande Côte. The highest point of Braillans is reached here at 450 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this ridge forms an anticline and is oriented in the south-west-north-east direction according to the strike direction of the Jura.

Neighboring communities of Braillans are Vieilley in the north, Marchaux-Chaudefontaine in the east, Thise in the south and Besançon in the west.

With 205 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Braillans is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 23 and 67 people, there has been significant population growth since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Braillans was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses (civil engineering, painting). In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the departmental road from Besançon to Rougemont . The closest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around six kilometers away.
